It is time! Who are my new favorite humans?
Gibbs is 7 -8 years old, last weighed in at 53lbs, and he is a purebred Dalmatian (who may have had AKC papers at one time but they were not recovered). He is a black and white neutered male with two dark eyes and appears to be bilaterally hearing.
I’m taking applications from interested individuals for adoption of Gibbs, whose owner sadly passed away unexpectedly on January 5th. Gibbs was with her from 8 weeks on. His person loved him very much and he grieved hard for her and the loss of his normal life for the first few weeks after we brought him home. His probable breeder was contacted and she did not want him back.
His former housemates are in different homes now and Gibbs has been at a foster home (experienced Dal owners) for 3 weeks. He had a modest adjustment period there but is adapting well now and we think it’s time to find him his forever home.
Gibbs was in a home with cats and two other dogs (a pup and a 13 year old spayed female) and is currently in a foster home with 5 other dogs, and getting along well with all but one guardian intact female.
Both his foster and I believe he is better suited to a no young children household. Kids ages 8 and up seem reasonable to us.
Gibbs loves to go for supervised freedom pack walks and solo walks. He lives to fetch. For downtime, he chews on his antlers and Benebones. He will shred a pillow or blanket if unattended. He will play with other dogs and humans. He is not hyper. He has a relax mode and he is pleasant to be around.
He is being fed a floated quality food now in his kennel and he will resource guard his food and toys in his kennel.
He is a vocal boy who grumbles when he’s being challenged but he isn’t extreme or aggressive or overly willful or unmanageable by any means.
His recall is fairly good, and treats do help.
Trimming his toenails took some patience, treats, and effort on my part, but we got it done with a combination of nail trimming scissors and a Dremel.
We believe he may be LUA but he has not been tested so is being fed and treated as HUA.
He is up to date on his vet checks to include vaccinations and deworming. He was recently microchipped. He has a couple sores on his paws that are scabbed over and healing. His weight is just right now. He is stable and ready for the next chapter of his life.
The qualifying adoptive family will have a stable income, own their own home or have a 2+ year old lease, must have a fenced yard, no children under 8 (exceptions for experienced Dal owners and others on a case by case basis), and own / board no aggressive or unneutered male dogs. They will also commit to paying for any veterinary care Gibbs should need for the rest of his life. They will enroll and participate in at least one dog class with Gibbs within 4 weeks of adoption (think bonding like Scentwork, CGC or basic obedience).
The new owner will agree to floating his food with water and feeding a low purine quality food.
Gibbs is to be left alone no longer than 8 hours, and using a crate or kennel for when he is unattended.
The new owners agree that Gibbs will have annual veterinary exams and care / vaccinations as recommended by their veterinary provider. Finally, they will agree to consult with us and return him to us if anything catastrophic occurs and they can no longer have dogs.
I know it is a lot to ask, but it is what all dogs deserve.
We have a modest rehoming fee and the new owner will pay for any transportation costs to his new home.
